The word 'Fortean' was coined by Ben Hecht, and is derived from the name of the first person in modern times to do such work, Charles Hoy Fort, an American from Albany, NY who tirelessly spent decades researching scientific journals in the US and England, extracting all of the reports on material he called "damned," (as in, excluded), those items which were hard, if not impossible, to explain; and subsequently ignored, ridiculed or suppressed by the mainstream scientists and media.  He had a disdain for such people, as do I.  He astutely noted that science was just the currently prevailing fashion.  Sadly, it still is.

A subject of particular interest to me, due to an incident in my youth. There indeed are many things seen in the sky which, by conventional paradigms, shouldn't be there. Due to human nature, innumerable explanations have been offered up for our perusal. Most of them are a bit of a stretch, some quite ludicrous, others quite plausible; and any or all of them could be correct. Unfortunately, the field attracts more than it's share of loonies and worse - most of whom spend their time ridiculing each other as opposed to actually researching. There is a lot of good work out there, however, so all is not lost.

This stuff is great to read and think about. Increasingly, it can be rather chilling and downright frightening. If there ever was a time to bone up on the information that's out there, this is it. It never fails to get the gray matter going, that much is assured. Enjoy. And be afraid... as something wicked this way comes!

These formations are simply beautiful to look at. The circumstances of their creation combined with their size do give one pause, and a good, long pause at that. The sheer size and scope of the current designs stretch the man-made hypothesis to the breaking point. So, off we go, again, into the unknown.

I've always loved the natural world and animals in particular, so I have an affinity for cryptozoology, the study of "hidden animals." First popularized by Bernard Heuvelmans, there are only a certain few scientists and lay people pursuing it. To it's credit, there have been quite a few successes; and the excuses given against it are ridiculously lame. So - bring 'em back alive!

• Circlemakers This site should be visited by all those interested in circles. As the name implies, they have some inside information on some designs.

• The Centre for Fortean Zoology Jonathan Downes' group - into the study of elusive, sometimes unusual, animals in our midst. They do real field research, the latest an expedition to Gambia seeking the 'ninki-nanka.'
  
  
• The Bigfoot Field Research Organization Large group researching sightings. One can even go on their field expeditions if one is hardy enough... and brave enough.
  
  
• Bigfoot Recordings! Yes! Sometimes quite eerie, of purported hominid vocalizations. Very cool. I hope to do these recordings myself someday.
  
  
• Eastern Ohio Bigfoot Investigation Center Don Keating and crew report on field investigations of Bigfoot sightings in the Ohio wood.

The Fortean Picture Library The Bords have put together what must be the world's largest collection of images of things that shouldn't be, but, for some reason, are.

• Saucer Smear A highly irreverent, wonderful site that captures the real feel of the group of folks known as UFOlogists. Check this out first to get your mindset calibrated.
  
  
• Dr. Bruce Maccabee The thorough research of an eminent optical research physicist into the bizarre world of the UFO.  Bruce proves that science can indeed deal with these phenomena if it wants to.
  
  
• NARCAP The National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena. Dr. Richard Haines reviews pilot cases.
  
  
• Stanton Friedman Tireless researcher, lecturer and physicist has had a major influence on the field.
  
  
• Mystery Aircraft Published by The Federation of American Scientists. This site is a fascinating, and authoritative look at ultra-classified aerial vehicles that are often seen, or even just conjectured to exist, that are far beyond the norm.
  
  
• Inexplicata - The Journal of Hispanic Ufology A nicely written site. Lots of truly unusual happenings. Reports are in-depth studies. Definitely worth a visit.
  
  
• HBCC UFO Research A well-done serious site from Canada that presents current sightings and maintains archives.
